EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Jesse Shelley, Drummer of Sleepwave – “I don’t remember a day of my life that I didn’t think playing music was the coolest thing in the world”

Since 2013, Sleepwave has been paving a new direction for the future of alternative rock. The band’s creation was spearheaded by members, Spencer Chamberlain and Stephen Bowman, but after the success of their album, Broken Compass, more members were added. One of those additions was drummer, Jesse Shelley who joined Sleepwave in 2014 and has been rocking out with them since. Jesse talks about his humble beginnings in a small town in Indiana where his love for music grew, how his journey with Sleepwave came to be, his undeniable passion for music, and the first show of the Stay Out of The Water Tour with fellow rock band, He Is Legend.

Let’s get the generic questions out of the way first. Who are your influences as a drummer?

“My biggest influence as a drummer would be Dave Grohl, from his work with Nirvana and his earlier days with Foo Fighters. He’s someone I’ve followed the entirety of my life behind the drums. John Bonham [drummer of Led Zeppelin] is also a prominent influence of mine. Other than that, I kind of just take little influences from different great drummers that I’ve gotten to tour with from over the years.”

How long have you been a member of Sleepwave? How did you become a part of Sleepwave and what drew you to them?

“I joined in 2014, right after the album release. Sleepwave’s first 2 tours as a band were done by a different drummer, but I was already learning songs before he had finished that 2nd tour. I joined up with the band in November. Joining the band was a fairly quick process. I had spent a solid year touring with a different rock band, and had crossed paths with Sleepwave at a radio festival in Michigan. I was talking to their old drummer after the set, and he mentioned that it would be his final tour with the band. A few weeks later, I was put in touch with Jack (guitar player) about auditioning for the open slot. Sleepwave was a band I always was interested in playing for. I moved to Nashville a few years back, and the first week I lived there, Stephen [Stephen Bowman] and Spee [Spencer Chamberlain] were in town recording demos for what was to become Broken Compass. One of the studio interns was telling me about what they were up to, and my first thought was “I really think I should be the one who plays drums for that band.” Haha Obviously it didn’t work out until a few years later, but it’s kind of interesting it did actually end up happening that way. We all enjoy the same type of bands and music, so that’s why it was really easy to make the transition and join them.”

So, you all have similar tastes in music, but do you have similar opinions? Spencer did an interview saying, “Why can’t we just be bands and have the listeners interpret the lyrics however they would like?” Is this a shared opinion of the band? And, what other ways do you hope Sleepwave’s music impacts its fans?

“We come from different backgrounds and beliefs, but we all play music for the exact same reasons, and that’s because we simply love to play. It’s not to spread a specific message. We are just honest people playing music for honest people. I’ve never understood mixing religion up in music. It’s not like a basketball player plays “Christian basketball” he just plays because he loves playing haha. I play drums because it’s my favorite thing in the world. I love to inspire people. If they leave a show feeling stoked on life and music, I feel like I’ve made a difference in the world.”

[Intermission. Jesse left to jam out on the first show of the Stay Out Of The Water Tour in Richmond, VA.]

I completely agree. Music should be about music. With that said, let’s talk about Sleepwave’s music. I am assuming you just got done kicking off the Stay Out Of The Water Tour with He Is Legend. How was the first show? What are you looking forward to most about the rest of the tour and being on the road with He Is Legend?

“We just finished our first show of the tour. Was super pleased with how everything went! I am most looking forward to watching these dudes play every night. I’m a longtime fan of that band, so it’s great to be on the road together. All such great dudes, so this is one of those tours where we can all hang out and have a great time everyday with each other. We hope to go out with these dudes again sometime!”

Hopefully that does happen in the future again! It’s a great lineup. I know it made a lot of people excited to see both Sleepwave and He Is Legend on tour together. Everyone knows that you guys are currently touring, but what is next for Sleepwave? Have there been any talks about a second album? If so, where do you see the bands sound going?

“After we finish up with HIL [He Is Legend], we’ll be hitting a full U.S. tour with our friends Norma Jean and ’68. We’re really looking forward to that one. As far as new music goes, I’m not really the dude who’s at liberty to say when and where things are going. I can however say that we’re all really stoked to do another album. For now, the priority is just to stay on the road, meet some people, and spread the word about the band. We’ve had a great time this year making new friends. I’m hoping 2016 is all this year was and more.”

That’s all fans can ask for! One final question. Let’s get more personal. We know you are a musician who is passionate about what you do. But, tell is a little bit about yourself, your background, hobbies, loves, weird facts, etc. What do you want people to know about Jesse Shelley?

“I was born in a small corn-town in Indiana. Middle child of 2 brothers. I started my first band when I was 9 years old. Everything in my life has revolved around music ever since. I never really picked up any other hobbies. Something people might not know, is that drums aren’t my first instrument. I’ve been playing guitar and piano my whole life. Always writing. Always, always.”

Is your family musical as well or is that something you picked up on your own?

“There’s a lot of musical ability in my family, though I’m the only one who ever pursued music as a career. Both my dad and my mom play the drums (My mom’s actually a better drummer than my dad hahaha). I got started playing so early, because my mother was the lead singer in our church, so I started learning guitar and drums to play for services. My love for rock and roll comes from my dad. He loves classic rock music, and was always blasting music and showing me different music videos. So truly, I don’t remember a day of my life that I didn’t think playing music was the coolest thing in the world.”

Forget Donald Trump, We Want Kevin Spacey 2015

Very rarely do we ever have an instance where a celebrity applies for office, let alone the oval office, but here we are in 2015 and sadly that individual is Donald Trump. I am here to launch a much better campaign: Kevin Spacey 2015. Can you imagine, the wondrous actor who brought us Frank Underwood in the hit Netflix Original, House of Cards, running our country? It would be epic and honestly a far greater moment in America’s history than bumbling idiots like Trump making a play for the presidency. Who wouldn’t want to see Spacey doing his presidential addresses as Frank Underwood? There would never be a more viewed presidential address in history. Well, within reason.

l-157507

The first reason I think Spacey would make a great candidate is because people love him. It is just a proven fact. For instance, Netflix, wanted to make a program with Kevin Spacey in it, because they found that people love his movies and his acting. If Kevin Spacey is in it it, you can bet ratings and likability go up, therefore, I believe that he is the perfect candidate to be the most “powerful” man on Earth.

Secondly, he played Frank Underwood. In order to execute the role as perfectly as he did, we know he had to do his research. I have no doubt in my mind that Spacey has the knowledge and the competency to implement policy, govern individuals, and work with leaders of the world. Not to mention, he has a great view on things and makes important, well-founded comments. Take the following quotes for instance:

“Give people what they want, when they want it, in the form they want it in, at a reasonable price, and they’ll more likely pay for it rather than steal it. Well, some will still steal it, but I think we can take a bite out of piracy.”

“I feel it’s a responsibility for anyone who breaks through a certain ceiling… to send the elevator back down and give others a helpful lift.”

Anyway you look at it, having Spacey as the president of the United States would be pretty cool. Though I think he has found his own area to reign in, film, I believe that he would be a great celebrity candidate for presidency. For the first time, in awhile, he would make people interested in politics. In the end, it’s all about what the people want and I think that people, if they have to have a celebrity in office, want Spacey 2015.

3 Studies That Show A Zombie Apocalypse Could Be Probable

Though I am sorry to tell you that the whole dead-coming-back-to-life theory, or in more scientific terms, reanimation, has no scientific basis, other aspects of the living dead have been found to be probable. Zombies have become a part of popular media, but is it possible that they could become more than just a fantasy and part of our reality? The following 3 scientists and studies find that it could very well be possible. All this information may turn out to just be a zombie-killer-in-training’s wet dream, but nonetheless it is an interesting theory to explore and think about.

1. RABIES MUTATION

db33b7c64f9a4073d2b750dd51e8d4af

National Geographic, in their documentary, The Truth Behind Zombies, explored the science behind a zombie outbreak. One of the main highlights is the idea that a genetic mutation of the rabies virus could cause zombie-like behavior and symptoms. If, for instance, the rabies virus combined with the flu virus, it could possibly become airborne and infect more individuals. Though the body wouldn’t be reanimated, an enhanced, more efficient rabies virus would be able to cause anxiety, confusion, hallucinations, and paralysis in the inflicted. This theory can be likened to the “rage virus” in 28 Days Later. Though there is a lot that still needs to be proven, we all have seen how rabies affects animals and humans. If it could manage to keep it’s host alive and find an easier way of transmission, this mutation could very well zombify many of the world with disillusion and rage.

2. ZOMBIE VIRUS

96559_201306141503321

Another popular theory being explored is the possibility of a zombie virus. According to Kartik Chandran, an immunologist and microbiologist at Albert Einstein College who studies the Ebola virus, it could be possible due to viral genetics. “But there’s another way that a mutant virus can arise: if there’s a glitch in the genetic copying machinery of an existing virus.  Sometimes, one of these mutations confers an advantage to the virus that allows the mutated strain to outcompete others and quickly take over the world. Called a “selective sweep,” this usually happens frequently with influenza.” Basically, a zombie virus could be created by selective sweeping, which would allow a virus to virtually pick it’s symptoms and affects on the human body. This could very well create a World War Z situation where a widespread virus infects the brains and takes over the bodies of millions of people.

3. NEUROTOXINS

18loubqbk2i8ujpg

Certain neurotoxins have been proven to put individuals in a zombie-like state. Though the rage and cannabalism aspect haven’t been researched much, the ability for people to appear “dead” has. According to Mysterious Universe and ethnobotanist, Wade Davis, ““Zombie powders” contained a powerful neurotoxin such as that derived from puffer fish called tetrodotoxin. He theorized that the resulting toxic powder could then be delivered to the target in a variety of ways such as in their food, applied as a paste to skin, or even inhaled as an airborne dust. In non-lethal doses, tetrodotoxin produces paralysis and can induce a death-like state characterized by a low body temperature, extremely reduced rate of breathing, and a very slow and faint, almost imperceptible heartbeat.” I may have said that there isn’t much support in the living-dead theory, but it is possible that the right neurotoxin could lead to the creation of the zombies we all know from old films like Dawn of the Dead.

These studies and bits of scientific information have basis, but they still need to be evaluated and proven. Though we know that viruses and neurotoxins could create zombie-like affects, is it possible for them to mutate and advance enough to cause a wide-spread zombie outbreak? A lot of people think it’s possible, but for now you zombie killers are just going to have to keep preparing for the unknown and all the other citizens of the world can continue watching their popular zombie films feeling safe in the fantasy of it all. At the least, all these studies and outlooks provide proof that popular horror and science fiction films can influence the scientific community and that’s pretty cool.

Top 8 Action & Adventure Movies Currently Streaming on Netflix

Looking for crazy action scenes and a movie that will keep you full of suspense? Look no further. Time and time again, I find myself scrolling through the entire suggestion page of Netflix looking for something to jump out at me. In the midst of all those terrible B movies, are hidden gems that you may overlook while scrolling through all the titles. With that said, I have taken the time to find the top eight titles in the Adventure & Action genre. They are all currently streaming as well, so find what you are looking for and watch away.

l-156735

Year Released: 2012

Top Actors: Jamie Foxx, Leonardo Dicaprio, Samuel L. Jackson, Christoph Waltz.

Top Quote: Dr. Schultz: “How do you like the bounty hunting business?” Django: “Kill white people and get paid for it? What’s not to like?”

Summary: As in every other Tarantino film, the blood and gore is plenty in Django Unchained. Set just a few years before the Civil War in the deep South, Tarantino highlights the inequality of the era but evens the score with Django’s rage and indiscretion towards the slaving white man (and the Mandingos). Django falls in love with a young lady by the name of Broomhilda, whose name is based on a German fairytale, and the rest is history; That is until they get separated. He shoots down many bodies and explodes many barriers to be reunited with his beloved. Nothing can stand between true love, not even slavery in this action-packed, wonderfully over the top film.

Year Released: 2009

Top Actors: Brad Pitt, Christoph Waltz, Diane Kruger, Eli Roth, Melanie Laurent.

Top Quote: “My name is Lt. Aldo Raine and I’m putting together a special team, and I need me eight soldiers. Eight Jewish-American soldiers. Now, y’all might’ve heard rumors about the armada happening soon. Well, we’ll be leaving a little earlier. We’re gonna be dropped into France, dressed as civilians. And once we’re in enemy territory, as a bushwhackin’ guerrilla army, we’re gonna be doin’ one thing and one thing only… killin’ Nazis.

Summary: Set during World War II, Inglourious Basterds, is filled with brutal action. Lt. Aldo Raine (Pitt) leads a group of American Jewish soldiers into german “territory” to do one thing and one thing only, kill Nazis. As storylines cross, a young woman’s hate for the Nazi’s joins the brutal massacre. You’ll want to watch this movie for these points and more, but most of all, you really don’t want to miss Brad Pitt’s ridiculous accent.

Summary: In 1979, every gang in New York set their differences aside to come hear out a new up-and-coming bopper named Cyrus. His plan is to unify the gangs to take over the streets of New York. His plan fails however when he is assassinated and the blame is falsely placed on The Warriors. They are now wanted by every gang in New York and they have to fight their way back to their turf. Watch them navigate the massive violent playground that lies between them and their home, Coney Island. It’s a movie based on gangs in the 70’s. What more could you want?

Year Released: 1974

Top Actors: Bruce Lee, Nora Miao, Chuck Norris.

Top Quote: “Oh, what rippling muscles! We don’t want to kill you.”

Summary: Enter the Dragon (Return of the Dragon) is full of humor & action, two elements that make a truly great kung-fu movie. Lee’s action scenes are elegant yet harsh. And let’s not forget the best part of the movie: the epic showdown between Lee & Norris. Though the unexpected, ill conceived ending takes this film down a notch, the remainder of the movie is both comical and entertaining to watch.

My Rating: 93%

l-155425

Year Released: 1992

Top Actors: Harvey Keitel, Chris Penn, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Steve Buscemi.

Top Quote: “Listen kid, I’m not gonna bullshit you, all right? I don’t give a good fuck what you know, or don’t know, but I’m gonna torture you anyway, regardless. Not to get information. It’s amusing, to me, to torture a cop. You can say anything you want cause I’ve heard it all before. All you can do is pray for a quick death, which you ain’t gonna get…You ever listen to K-Billy’s “Super Sounds of the Seventies” weekend? It’s my personal favorite.”

Summary: Reservoir dogs, one of the most critically-acclaimed films of all time, is about a jewelry heist gone wrong. After the the crime has been completed, the criminals become suspicious of one another as they all start to believe that there is a police informant in their midst. Watch the heist team unravel in this suspense-filled film.

Year Released: 1994

Top Actors: John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman.

Top Quote: “Say ‘what’ again. Say ‘what’ again, I dare you, I double dare you motherfucker, say what one more Goddamn time!”

Summary: Pulp fiction is one of the most bold, critically-acclaimed Tarantino films of all time. It’s dark humor will make you want to both laugh and cringe, but it’s all in good fun. As always with every Tarantino film, the blood is always running but it will shoot its way into your heart with its vulgar, irrefutable charm. This pop-culture, neo-noir-based film is one that drastically affected the 1990’s, but it still has a mental vice-grip on viewers and movie fanatics today. If you haven’t seen it, you will know just why in 2 hours and 34 minutes.

How Many Awesome Bands Can Epitaph Records House? The Answer Is: Nearly All of Them

Epitaph Records, a record label based in Los Angeles, California, makes us beg one very important question:  How many game-changing, awesome artists can one label house? And the answer as shown in the title is nearly all of them. But, it’s not the location, the music hot spot of the world, that has this label rising to the top. The label’s name, Epitaph, is defined as: a phrase or statement written in memory of a person who has died, especially as an inscription on a tombstone. These bands may be alive and well but one thing is sure, they are going to make their mark in rock history. Epitaph has an archive of artists that have changed the way we think of and listen to music and I have a feeling that it will remain this way for many, many years to come.

8 Bands You Are Still Growing Up With

They were pertinent then, and they are still pertinent now; the bands that got you through your angsty teenage years have managed to follow you into adulthood. Apparently there’s truth to the saying, “Some things never change.” But, who’s complaining when it comes to awesome music? Some of the following bands grew popular while others faded into the background, but one thing is sure, you have yet to grow out of them and probably never will.

These bands have withstood the test of time either in terms of popularity or their ability to still remain awesome in your mind. They are bands we are still growing up with and will continue to grow up with most likely until the end.

Studies Show That Music Pushes Past Your Ears, Delves Into Your Brain, And Hardwires Itself Into Your Personality

Though musical stereotypes are frowned upon, there is truth to them scientifically. Personality wise, musical stereotypes are even more accurate. We listen to music for a reason. Well, most of us. Whether we listen to music for a cultural reason, means to make a statement, or emotional motivators, there is no shadow of a doubt that music affects and even molds our personalities. Contrary to what some believe, music does indeed affect more than just our ears.

Take me as a subject example. I primarily listen to subsets of the rock, heavy metal, and alternative genres; I am particularly fond of post-hardcore, pop punk, and melodic hardcore genres. That gives you a little bit of my musical background. As far as my personality goes, I would define myself as the following: introverted, opinionated, creative, and eclectic. Now, one may believe that based on stereotypes that my personality and my music taste correlate with one another. Many studies show that this statement is actually true. I took a personality test based on my music taste and my personality and the results were exactly as I expected them to be:

Aggressive & Edgy Dimension

People high on this dimension tend to enjoy Alternative, Rock, and Heavy Metal music. On the Edgy & Aggressive Dimension you fell in the 64 percentile. This score is quite high.

Based on your responses, you scored above average on the edgy and aggressive music-preference dimension. Research in our laboratory indicates that people high on this dimension, like you, often have the following characteristics:

People with high scores on the energetic and aggressive music-preference dimension tend to enjoy taking risks and engaging in thrilling experiences. They also tend to be dominant, imaginative, and energetic. They tend to be politically liberal, and believe that freedom, independence, and excitement are important aspects of life. When it comes to lifestyle, lovers of edgy and aggressive music, tend to come from the middle to lower classes. As for media entertainment, they’re likely to enjoy watching action, science fiction, fantasy, war, and horror movies.

Honestly, they couldn’t of explained me any better. Demographically, I associate myself with democratic/liberal ideals and values and I fall within the middle class. My interests are centered among a great amount of fantasy and science fiction pop culture. Personality wise, I am introverted but I love the feeling that “heavier” music elicits within me; that adrenaline and feeling of overwhelming freedom. Possibly the biggest hit on the nose is my need for dominance/control over situations (not people) and my overactive imagination. It’s a little unsettling when you can be so clearly defined by your interests, but is it such a bad thing? You chose your interests for a reason. Most likely because they connect with you on a personal and deep level. Over the years, I have embraced the stereotypes that the music I listen to has pushed me into, even the negative ones. Yes, even the negative ones. I know that may be crazy but I can’t deny that they are true and that they are there for a reason.

Finding out your musical personality can help you understand yourself more, but it as well can help you understand others. One thing I firmly believe in is that individuals should use music to get to know one another. Sharing musical experiences is quite possibly one of the greatest way to bring individuals together. Though individuals of different musical genres can clash, like any differing personality can, it still can help individuals get a feel for each other on a personal level. It is well-known that having similar interests benefits relationships. If you don’t have a whole lot of similar tastes in music, find a middle ground; music that can appease both of you. And those of you have the same musical interests, just because you both fall into the same musical genre, does not mean you will have the same interests. My boyfriend and I, for instance, like the same bands but completely different songs. He likes to more upbeat songs and I like to more melancholic, slow ones.  You may like a similar sound but a completely different feel. It’s all subjective to the listener, but there are still qualities of certain genres that transcend to all individuals. Overall, the main goals and interests of genres can be defined by particular characteristics or qualities and they can be used to define your personality and help others get to know you.

Listening to music does more than just affect your ears and the listening centers of your brain; It elicits an emotional response and also hardwires itself into our personality. It provides proof that we do more than just listen to music; we feel it, identify with it, connect socially with it, and are even influenced by it.

Rebirth Is Coming: Fans Make Assumptions About Underoath’s Latest Post

Recently Underoath posted an image sporting these three simple words (found below) on July 31st and fans went up in a frenzy, like sharks swarming a school of fish. Due to the vague contents of the post, fans quickly jumped on the bandwagon of making their own assumptions as to what this could mean for the band’s future. Now, I know I’m late to post this, but I think it is very pertinent that fans stop assuming and making their own interpretations as to what the statement “Rebirth is coming” is supposed to convey. Should we get excited, yes! But, we should wait to hear further news before we jump to conclusions about what this could exactly mean.

Nonetheless assumptions are being made and here are some of the most popular ones that can be found underneath the comment section of the post:

1. Underoath is getting back together. Could this be possible? Yes. We see it time and time again. Bands break up, because after all they are only human. Sometimes they then later decide that they’ve made a mistake. Reunion tours are something that are so common these days that fans almost expect them to happen a few months after a band breaks up. But, after watching Tired | Violence we see just how big of a divide that values and ideals placed between the band. Is there any coming back from that? I’m not sure. But, as I mentioned this is all speculation. Though we want to assume this will happen because Underoath was one of the most revolutionary bands of our generation, I wouldn’t get your hopes up too high.

2. Underoath is going to do one last tour together. As assumptions go ( if I’m getting in on the conspiracy), this is the one I’d bet on. It is highly likely that the band misses touring together. They didn’t leave on bad terms, but they still have a rift that is separating them somewhat. Doing an album together would be a commitment that I’m not sure all the band members are willing to make. Doing a tour however is an idea that I could see them possibly agreeing to.

3. The band will contain some of the old members but new members as well. Maybe, just maybe. Some members wanted a more Christian outlook while others were losing their faith in that direction. This caused yet another rift between the band. Can I see certain members banding together to create a “rebirth” of Underoath? Yes. But, can I see other bands member’s like Spencer or Aaron quitting their new bands to go completely back to Underoath? No. There may be some truth to this assumption but only time can tell.

4. Sleepwave failed and Spencer ran back to Underoath. I know I said let’s not make assumptions, but this is a hard no. Spencer did not fail and Sleepwave sure as hell did not fail. In my opinion, even if they did “fail,” I don’t see it as a failure to do something you love and something that is in line with who you are as a person. I sure hope that Sleepwave doesn’t become a thing of the past, because their music is just as good if not better than Underoath’s. I realize I may get crucified for saying that, but oh well.

There is one thing that all these assumptions and even my inputs have in common: they all contain maybe’s, possibly’s, etc. Nothing is set in stone yet.  The truth of the matter is that all of these assumptions could be right or they could be wrong. We just have a vague promise; a promise to something that we are not sure of yet. And as an Underoath fan, whatever that promise is, however little it may be, just be happy that you get to enjoy them a little bit longer (or maybe a lot longer). We aren’t sure yet, but we can at least be 100% sure that something is coming!
